报告内容摘要:

Shale rocks is comprised of two disticnt media of microscle heterogenoety of organic and inorganic matter. These two media have very different chemcial and mechanical proeproties. Recent measurememt by nanoidenttion ( Zhao, et al., 2019) provide an evidence of wast difference in Young modulus in different parts of a small shale sample in compression mode. Young modulus is a key parameter of mechaical properties, but Possion ratio and other mechanical paramters both in compression and extension are required to deterimine shale rock failure in relation to fracking.  Measurments on the effect of differen fluids on mechanical properties are major challenges

Kerogen is a dominant compoent of organic matter; it  may be mechanically weaker than inorganic matter. Fractues may initiate from kerogen. Failure envelope is often used as the criterion of rock failure for macroscopic simulations. In this study, we provide a practical scheme to determination the mechanical properties and failure envelope of kerogen by molecular dynamics simulations.  The compression and extension processes at various stress conditions are simulated. The mechanical properties and the parameters of the Mohr–Coulomb failure criterion are determined, including Young modulus, bulk modulus, Poisson ratio, compressive strength, tensile strength, cohesion, and friction coefficient. This work sets the stage for investigating the complex mechanisms of fracturing in shale media at the microscale.

报告人概况:

Abbas Firoozabadi is a world expert in hydrocarbon energy production and may be the most prolific author in petroleum engineering in the US compared to senior faculty members in the US research universities. He is senior scientist and director (founder) of the Reservoir Engineering Research Institute (RERI) in Palo Alto, CA and faculty member at Yale University in New Haven, CT. Abbas has published some 210 Journal papers in petroleum interfaces, thermodynamics of hydrocarbon reservoirs and production, and multiphase-multispecies flow in permeable media. He has published mainly in the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Journals, AIChE Journal, Journal of Chemical Physics, Journals of Physical Chemistry B and C, Langmuir, Water Resources Research, Advances in Water Resources, Soft Matter, Journal of Colloids and Interfaces, Energy& Fuel, and Journal of Computational Physics. He is the authors of “Thermodynamics of Hydrocarbon Reservoirs,” published by McGraw-Hill in 1999. His second book “Thermodynamics and Applications in Hydrocarbon Energy Production” was published in August 2015, also by McGraw-Hill. The second book has been adopted as a graduate text in few schools including Texas A&M, and University of Texas-Austin. He has received four of the five major awards of SPE. Abbas is a member of the US National Academy of Engineering.
